Steve Earle

Steve Earle nominated for Best Artist Award

12 06 2008

Some of Nashville’s most challenging and acclaimed musicians are up for prizes at the 7th Annual Americana Honors & Awards Show on Sept. 18.

Alison Krauss, Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller, Sam Bush, Justin Townes Earle, Mike Farris, The Steeldrivers and Kane Welch Kaplin are among the nominees for an awards show that celebrates country-based roots music of the sort that doesn’t often land on tightly formatted country radio. Nominees were announced tonight in BMI’s Music Row lobby by banjo virtuosos Abigail Washburn and Bela Fleck.

Steve Earle, who retains a residence in Middle Tennessee while living much of the year in New York City, is also up for top artist, as are McMurtry and Helm. For the first time, two sets of fathers and songs received nominations. Earle’s son, Justin Townes Earle is the son of Steve Earle, while the Kane Welch Kaplin combo (top duo or group) includes Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch, Fats Kaplin and Kane’s percussionist son, Lucas Kane.

Winners will be announced at the Ryman Auditorium on Sept. 18 during a show that will feature numerous performances and some lifetime achievement awards.
